Have visited previously last month for lunch and was impressed with the warm Portuguese welcome and excellent auyhentic food. Came back for dinner with friends and was surprised to find out there was a larger dining room upstairs. They happily accommodated an extra guest. The food was excellent - went for a large choice of tapas and the waiter provided excellent advice on the menu. He repeated this with the wine list too.. Large, tasty portions and excellent service - will be back in New Year.
A Portuguese bar and restaurant in Lambeth, still in family hands after more than 20 years. Expect a firm Portuguese feel to things here – the staff are all Portuguese, as is most of the food, the drinks and even the football (beamed in via Portugal). Monkfish, octopus and seafood stews are a speciality here, alongside Portuguese paellas and lobster with spaghetti. The menu also includes grilled sardines, sun-dried cod with chickpeas and egg, and carno de porco a Portuguesa – a dish of fried pork, chorizo and peppers. A short wine list sticks to Iberia, with beer from Sagres, Cristal, Super Bock and Preta. POSTED: WEDNESDAY MARCH 30 2016
The atmosphere is always lively and laid back, with the outdoor seating being a coveted spot during the summer- on a nice day you feel like you are miles away from London. Drinks prices are very reasonable (£2 for a bottle of Sagres and £11 a bottle of house wine.) I've yet to have a tapas dish I havnt enjoyed - favourite being the grilled Octopus - and the portions are huge for tapas. Meal for family of 4 with wine, beers and coffees came to less than £80 which is very good value considering how much food we had.
We went to Estrela on Saturday night. Service could not have been better and our meals were superb. Look forward to going again. No 88 bus service right to the door, so we had a nice bottle of Portuguese Rose to wash it all down.
Catch a lively and authentic Portuguese vibe at this celebration of Iberian drink, food and culture in Lambeth. Over 20 years in the family, Estrela Bar is manned exclusively by Portuguese staff, and you can expect a similar reflection of the culture in the food and drink on offer. Enjoy a simple but fine selection of Portuguese wine and fill up on Iberian tapas, bacalhau, seafood stews and paellas. That's hella authentic yo, and these guys even beam in their native sports, so grab yourself a cold Sagres, a chorizo and prepare to get the flag waving.
I ventured into an unassuming bar/cafe and discovered a nice bit of Portugal with attentive service, no frills, good food and a sense of "being abroad" - many Portuguese dominated the patronage. I was concerned with such a number of menu options in a cafe/bar environment may mean iffy quality - so I was pleasantly surprised with my seafood selection quality. To finish my good coffee, Portuguese Custard tarts and aquardiente was a delightful end to a good meal. I've been again and went for Tapas & found as good. Do go if you want to experience Portugal.
Staying nearby for a wedding reception later in the day. Walked from our hotel a number of Portuguese restaurants but this looked the most inviting, outside seating and open folding doors. Light lunch over a bottle of wine in no hurry. Went on the recommendation of our waiter for a tapas. The choice was very good three dishes for the two of us, one of our party just a sandwich, the best ever for ages the remaining one of our party had an omelette with loads of chips. It reminded us of being in the Med so laid pack, many local Portuguese using the restaurant which in itself shows the standard. Very clean and well presented.
"Considered by many to be the best drinking option in Little Portugal, the Star Bar is certainly the finest spot at which to watch European football, beamed in on Portuguese TV. Cold Super Bocks, custard tarts and portions of stew and sundry pork dishes served in half or full measures add to the Iberian atmosphere. You can stand at the bar, but it’s more of a sit-down-and-be-served kind of place, with the uniformed waiters gradually getting used to a pace of life a few notches faster than Portugal’s. You may have to catch someone’s attention if you’ve bagged a terrace seat. Otherwise, Estrela is relaxed and informal, even on big-match nights."
"No need to go to Portugal, Bar Estrela transports you there without the horrible Ryanair flight. Mostly Portuguese patrons, the restaurant is truly targeted to that community. The food is typical Portuguese food, coffees that are made properly and cheap beer. They have an outdoor seating area, which is where most everyone sits. You can literally lounge for hours and no one will bother you. Recently, my flatmate and I go here for breakfast on Saturday mornings. The coffee is great and their omelets are super. Best part, super cheap! They also have a good take-out service."
"A friend and I pop in here quite frequently as it's handy. Offers good tapas dishes at a reasonable price. If you've never tried it, as for some chicken gizzard, it's delicious in spite of what your brain may be telling you! Good food, good prices and good wine what a winner!"
